An assessment of the flow of communication in nursing teams

Abstract

An urban hospital is the scene for studying the formal communication in nursing teams. Conclusions are drawn concerning upward and downward communication flow.

Mr. Ayres (Ph.D., University of Utah) is Assistant Professor of Speech at Washington State University, Pullman, Washington; Ms. Brand (Graduate, School of Nursing, University of Virginia) is Professor of Nursing, Grand Valley State College, Allendale, Michigan; and Mr. Faules (Ph.D., Ohio State University) is Associate Professor of Speech at the University of Utah, Salt Lake City, Utah. This study was supported by the Nursing Service at the University of Utah Medical Center, the College of Nursing at the University of Utah, and the Speech Department's Communication Research and Training Laboratory at the University of Utah.
