Abstract
This essay suggests that speech communication students and teachers who are eager to engage in communication consulting might usefully reassess their conceptions about the consultant's lifestyle, their responses to ethical problems inherent in the consulting process, and their awareness of the personal qualities required to succeed as a consultant. Such a reassessment can help the prospective consultant decide whether he or she is suited for this kind of professional activity and can help generate consulting programs and interventions that are ethically and pedagogically sound.
