Low Back Pain in the Cosmetic Athlete

Pages 97-102 | Published online: 12 May 2016

Abstract

In brief: The cases presented here exemplify the “cosmetic athlete,” who is motivated to achieve beauty through fitness. Goals of slimness and flexibility prompt her to overwork unconditioned muscles and stress her spine and other structures. Pain is considered a natural consequence of progress, and symptoms are often ignored. When a cosmetic athlete finally seeks medical attention, the physician might discover spinal abnormalities that have been stressed by exercise. Analysis of the patient's exercise activities helps in diagnosing the cause of pain and preventing further injury. The author discusses the types of exercise that are most harmful and suggests alternative exercise modes for this enthusiastic, active group of amateur female athletes.
