Exercise-Associated Symptoms in Triathletes

Pages 105-108 | Published online: 12 May 2016

Abstract

In brief: A total of 110 triathletes answered a questionnaire about symptoms they experienced while swimming, cycling, or running. The purpose was to identify symptoms that might occur during triathlon activities. The athletes did not experience frequent or troublesome symptoms while swimming or cycling. Running, however, was associated with a preponderance of gastroesophageal and colonic symptoms. The need to have a bowel movement was the most common reason given for interrupting or stopping exercise. Upper gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms were affected by intensity of exercise, recency of meals, and specific foods. Lower GI symptoms were affected by the same factors, in addition to anxiety. The women noted that abdominal cramps were more likely to occur if they exercised during their menses.
