Desert Shield: Military Wins Battle Against Heat Injury

Pages 141-145 | Published online: 12 May 2016

Abstract

During the Persian Gulf War, thousands of men and women from northern climates battled two enemies: Iraqi forces and extreme heat. US forces recognized that physiologic adaptation to the desert was a vital tool of war and concentrated on preventing heat illnesses. Peacekeeping troops who remain in the desert must continue to conquer the life-threatening conditions the climate poses. Physicians on the home front can share these heat-battling strategies with athletes and other patients.
