Abstract
The abundance of “quick fix” weight-reduction programs and products makes it relatively easy for patients to shed unwanted pounds fast. But research suggests that drastic weight-loss methods, such as those promoted in celebrity-endorsed advertising, may also set people up for repeated cycles of weight loss and gain. In the long run, such up-and-down battles with the scale may be more detrimental—increasing the risks of heart disease, gallbladder disease, and other adverse conditions—for mildly to moderately overweight patients than staying at a higher weight.
