Sports activities promote health and fitness for most participants, but for some, activity can complicate an illness or even be fatal. This article, the first of a two- part series on contraindications to activity, examines the cardiac, respiratory, and central nervous system conditions that warrant activity disqualification and provides guidelines about when it's safe for patients to participate.

Dr Moeller is associate director of Primary Care Sports Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center in Pittsburgh.
