Abstract

Optical waveguiding in dielectric planar ion-exchanged glass waveguides coated with nonlinear polydiacetylenes is studied. Two polydiacetylenes were used in order to measure intensity-dependent guided waves, but a nonlinear optical response can only be seen for one, namely p-3BCMU. For the TM2-mode the real part of the third-order nonlinear susceptibility of p-3BCMU is determined to be Rex (3) = -3.10−19 m2/V2 at 1.064 μm using both shift in modenumber and nonlinear coupling.
