Presented with a line which they are told represents time, Austrian adolescents were instructed to mark off their birth, death, and the boundaries of the present. While these estimates naturally, are subjectively determined, they are shown to vary with age, sex, and social class. Theories of instrumental-achievement and maintenance-ascriptive orientations are enlisted to explain the variations.
