Abstract
New sulphonamide Schiff base adducts of germanium tetra-chloride of the type GeCl4.2SBH2 have been prepared and characterized. These have been prepared by the reactions of germanium tetrachloride with bifunctional tridentate Schiff bases (SBH2) such as HOC6H4CH:NC6H4SO2KHR (where R represents various heterocycles) and having the donor system . Molecular weight determinations in boiling chloroform and molar conductance measurements in dimethyl formamide show their monomeric and non-electrolytic nature, respectively. The coordination of the azomethine nitrogen to germanium has been substantiated by IR and 1H NMR spectral studies and these further show the non-reactivity of the sulphonamide group on coordination. The elemental analyses and spectral data confirm a 1:2 (metal:ligand) stoichiometry with a coordination number of six for the central germanium atom.
