Abstract
Hydrogenation of the Schiff bases (py)2C[dbnd]N(CH2)2N[dbnd]C(py)2 and (py)2C[dbnd]N(CH2)3N[dbnd]C(py)2 (py[dbnd]2-pyridyl) produces the new hygroscopic ligands (py)2CHNH(CH2)2NHCH(py)2 [I] and (py)2CHNH(CH2)3NHCH(py)2 [II]. Bubbling HCl gas through ethanolic solutions of [I] forms the more stable hydrochloride salt of formula C24H24N6·6HCl·4H2O. Reactions of [I] with CoCl2·6H2O, CoBr2·6H2O and NiBr2·3H2O in tetrahydrofuran form the solids (CoCl2)2(I), (CoBr2)2(I) and (NiBr2)2(I)·H2O. These new ligands and complexes were characterized using NMR, IR, conductivity and thermogravimetric techniques.
