Abstract

Reactions of dioxygen with iron(II) perchlorate and Cu(I) chloride in the presence of di-2-pyridylketone (dpk), 2,2′,2″-tripyridine (terpy) or pyridine (py) produce the solids [Fe2(dpk)4(py)2O](ClO4)4.H2O, [Fe2(dpk.H2O)4 (py)2O] (ClO4)4, [Fe(terpy)2](ClO4)2, [Fe(dpk)2 (py)2] (ClO4)3 and [Cu2 (dpk)pyCl4]. The complexes were prepared by passing oxygen through solutions of the metal salts with the appropriate ligand mixture. In aqueous solution, oxo-bridged iron(III) dimers were formed while a dimeric copper (II) complex was isolated from acetonitrile. The copper compound represents the first reported example of di-2-pyridyl ketone coordinated through all three hetero-atoms (N,N,O) as a neutral ligand. Thermogravimetric studies reveal the loss of H2O, HCN, CO and pyridine at temperatures below 200°C.
