Abstract

Oxozirconium(IV) complexes with fifteen carboxylic acids have been synthesized. Cryoscopic molecular mass determination indicates that some of the complexes are monomeric. The magnetic susceptibilities of these complexes deviate from the calculated values. Conductance data show that they are non-ionic and therefore, the carboxylate groups are coordinated. The difference in frequency between the symmetric and asymmetric C-O stretches were used to infer whether the carboxylate groups are bonded in a monodentate, bidentate or bridging fashion. Coordinated water molecules presumably hydrogen bond with the carboxylate groups. Polymerization through Zr-O-Zr bridges may be present in some of the complexes but the degree of polymerization could not be established. Structure assignments based on our study is difficult
