Abstract

Ammonium hydrogen fluoride (AMHF) is known to be a versatile fluorinating agent and is capable of fluorinating in the solid state various oxides, salts and superconducting YBa2Cu3O6·5+δ oxide. In the present study, the reactivity of AMHF in the solid state up to its melting point with different metals like Al, Cr, Ni and zircaloy is presented. AMHF reacts with Al and Cr metals giving (NH4)3AlF6 and (NH4)3CrF6, respectively. But it does not react with Ni metal. The reaction between zircaloy and AMHF results in the formation of (NH4)2ZrF6.
