Abstract
Five new platinum(II) complexes of the formula [Pt(II)Bipy(A)2].xH2O [where Bipy is 2,2′-bipyridyl and A is the anion of benzoic acid (Benz), salicylic acid (Sali), p-aminobenzoic acid (p-ABenz), sulphanilic acid (Sulph) or p-aminophenol (p-APh)] have been synthesised by reaction of [Pt(II)BipyCl2] with the appropriate ligand dissolved in alkali and added in 1:2 molar ratio. These complexes have been characterized by chemical analyses, molar conductance and magnetochemical measurements and by spectral studies, viz. IR, and electronic absorption spectra. The results show that the complexes are non-electrolytes, diamagnetic and square planar. Bipyridyl acts as a bidentate ligand coordinating through its two nitrogens. The other ligands act as monodentate ligands coordinating through their carboxylate group (Benz, Sali, p-ABenz), sulphonic acid group (Sulph) or phenolic group (p-APh) by replacement of the proton.
