Abstract

Perchlorate complexes of ten lanthanides with the Schiff base 4-N-(2′-thienylidene)aminoantipyrine (TAA) were synthesized and characterized by elemental analyses, molar conductance, infrared spectroscopy and 1H NMR as well as electronic spectra and thermogravimetric analysis. The complexes may be formulated as [Ln(TAA)3(ClO4)](ClO4)2, where Ln = Y, La, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Dy, Ho or Er. The ligand TAA acts as a neutral tridentate ligand in these complexes. One of the perchlorates is a monodentate ligand coordinated to the metal center while the other two perchlorates are counter ions. The complexes are thermally stable up to 180 °C and decompose in two stages. A coordination number of ten is assigned to the metal ion in these complexes.
