Exclusionary Zoning on the Basis of Age

Abstract

The elderly constitute a significant segment of society. From 1960 to 1970 the number of people over 65 increased from 16.7 million to 19.6 million (a 17 per cent increase). About one out of six adults in the United States is 65 or older. By the year 2000, it is projected that the aged population will total 30.6 million. If retirement age continues to drop and medical advances prolong life, the elderly could constitute an even greater percentage of the total population in future years.
