Abstract
On July 2, 1985, New Jersey Governor Kean signed the state's new Fair Housing Law, N.J. Rev. Stat. $52:270–301. The new statute is the product of a long and arduous legislative process, As such, it contains inconsistencies that frequently result from the many political compromises necessary for the passage of groundbreaking and controversial legislation. However, there is much that is good in the legislation. In particular, it establishes several principles and creates a number of programs that put New Jersey in the forefront of creative housing policy in the United States.
