Abstract

Between 1980 and 1987, the population of outlying rural counties in metropolitan areas in the United States increased by nearly 7.5 million persons,1 making them the fastest growing areas in the nation. One consequence of this growth has been mounting development pressure on remaining agricultural land near urban centers, causing its rapid disappearance.
