Not Forgetting Sex: Simon on Gender Equality

Pam R. Sailors. (2016) Not forgetting sex: Simon on gender equality. Journal of the Philosophy of Sport, 43.1, 75-82. http://dx.doi.org/10.1080/00948705.2015.1112239

When the above article was published, some of the article was set as quotations, which could be seen to be misleading. However, this was not noticed before publication.

On page 76, bottom paragraph starting ‘Simon is aware, of course…’, only the below section is a quotation :

‘if particular women athletes wish to compete against men and are qualified to do so, they should not be prohibited from doing so based simply on generalizations that most women would not be competitive in such situations. A reasonable understanding of equal opportunity minimally would provide persons on an individual basis the chance to compete if qualified to do so and not prohibit them from doing so on grounds (such as sex) not related to their athletic qualifications.’ (Simon, Torres, and Hager 2015, 135).

On page 77, paragraph beginning ‘As committed as he is…’, only the below sections are quotations:

“Same-sex sports with same-sex rules allow ‘disabled’ females to learn about competition and winning, teamwork, hard work, and the thrill of participation in a manner parallel to the experience for ‘able’ males without suffering the inevitable defeat females would experience if they tried to compete directly with males” (McDonagh and Pappano 2008, 143).

“Upon reflection we may find that one who charges women’s sports are inferior simply has too narrow a conception of what qualities in sport are worth appreciating.” (Simon 1985, 114).

Taylor and Francis apologises for this error.
