Abstract

A number of (nearly) distribution-free tests have been proposed for the one-sample dispersion probiem (Chu, 1957: Miller. 1968), but they are either cumbersome to apply and/or not very powerful. Bearing in mind the surprisingly good small sampie power of the sign test, i t is proposedihai this rest be applied to subsampie ranges. The resuiting resr is very simpie to appiy and has fairly good small sampie power properties.
