On the accuracy of a normal approximation to the power of the mantel-haenszel procedure

Abstract

The accuracy of a normal approximation to the exact conditional power function of the Manic!-Haenszcl one degree ni freedom chi-squared procedure is nnesugaied The maximum approximation error over the parameter space is studied for designs with equal numbers of cases and controls within and across strata. An empirical rule is provided for the estimation of the maximum error, the rule performs well over a range of design constants of importance in stratified case-control studies.
