Teaching Deep Ecology: A Student Assessment

Abstract

A course on deep ecology was designed with cognitive and experiential aims. Conventional methods were used for the first aim; less conventional class and home-journal exercises were used for the second aim. At semester's end, students evaluated the course and reported high levels of learning and fun. They appreciated not only the concepts but also the experiences of reconnecting to the natural world, namely, greater awareness, deeper attachment, and metaphysical involvement.
