A symmetric bidentate Schiff-base ligand and its complex with Cd(II) is described. The ligand and its complex were characterized by microanalysis, UV-Vis, GC-Mass and FT-IR spectroscopic methods. The present work also studied the structures and electronic properties of the bidentate Schiff-base ligand by using ab initio and AM1 molecular orbital methods. Ab initio and AM1 geometrical predictions have been compared. The analysis of molecular orbitals (MOs) indicates that the N(3) and N(6) atoms could be the coordination sites in this ligand.
