Abstract

A novel mixed ligand complex [Sm(H2O)(4,4′-bpy)(CCl2HCOO)3]n has been synthesized and characterized by elemental and thermal analysis, IR and conductivity studies. A coupled TG–MS system was used to monitor principal volatile fragments evolved during pyrolysis. The crystal and molecular structure of the complex was determined. The samarium atom is nine coordinated by two oxygen atoms from one chelating tridentate dichloroacetate ligand, four oxygen atoms from four bidentate bridging dichloroacetate groups, one oxygen atom from a bridging tridentate dichloroacetate ligand, one water molecule and one nitrogen atom from 4,4′-bipyridyl. The coordination polyhedron can be described as tricapped trigonal prism, distorted towards a capped tetragonal antiprism. Molecules are linked up by O–H···N hydrogen bonds and stacking interactions to give a two-dimensional net.
