SOME FIRST ROW TRANSITION METAL COMPLEXES USING THIOSULPHATE AS A LIGAND

Abstract

A range of metal thiosulphate complexes of the type [ML_nS₂O₃]^x+ has been prepared, where M=Ni(II), Co(II) or Co(III), L=variety of nitrogen ligands. They have been characterised by i.r. and visible spectroscopy and by the measurement of magnetic moments. A complex using 1,2-diamino-2-methyl propane was prepared, [Ni(mepn)₂S₂O₃] which was a diamagnetic square planar complex; on standing it underwent rapid conversion to a distorted octahedral paramagnetic complex. A novel complex [Co py_2.5S₂O₃] was also prepared and its possible structure is discussed. Thermal analysis was conducted on several complexes.
