Abstract
An aqueous solution of Th(NO3)4·6H2O reacts with H2O2 at pH 9 to afford [Th2(O2)3(OH)2(H2O)4]·4H2O, 1. The complexes NH4[Th(O2)(PO4)(H2O)2], 2, and Na[Th(O2)PO4(H2O)2], 3, were synthesised by reaction of Th(NO3)4·6H2O with A2HPO4 (A = NH4 or Na) and H2O2 at pH 7.5–8. The Cs salt was prepared metathetically from the NH4 + salt. The complexes are diamagnetic, air-stable and insoluble in water and common organic solvents. Characterization of the complexes was by analysis, magnetic susceptibility, EPR measurements, vibrational spectroscopy and pyrolysis studies. IR and laser Raman evidence suggests the presence of both η2 and σ:σ bonded peroxide in 1. Complexes 1 and 2 in aqueous medium coverts SO2 and PPh3 into SO4 2- and PPH3O, respectively.
