Abstract
Powdered hops and lupulin concentrates separated from them, show an apparent rapid deterioration on exposure to air at ambient temperature. Much of this apparent α-acid loss is due to hardening of the normal coating of the lupulin glands. Near normal analyses can be obtained on moderately aged samples by mechanical rupturing of these hardened glands by treatment in a Ball jar or high-speed macerator with normal analytical solvents (e.g., benzene or toluene). This may also be a factor in some of the apparent deterioration of ordinary baled hops. Some further data are presented on the storage stability of hops and pellets under various conditions.
