The Most Important Influences in Health Promotion: Continuation of the Panel Discussion

Abstract

The Worksite Health Strategies column was inaugurated in the April/May 1989 issue of Health Education by the first interview in a panel discussion of the most important influences on health promotion. William M. Kizer, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Central States Health &Life Company of Omaha, was the first of three leaders in the field to be questioned. Continuing the discussion, I am pleased to introduce Dr. J. Michael McGinnis, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Health and Director of the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services since 1977. He also holds the rank of Assistant Surgeon General in the U.S. Public Health Service. In this capacity, Dr. McGinnis is responsible for overseeing promotion activities of the six principal agencies of the Public Health Service: The Alcohol, Drug Abuse and Mental Health Administration; the Centers for Disease Control; the Food and Drug Administration; the Health Resources and Services Administration; the Indian Health Service; and the National Institutes of Health. Dr. McGinnis has a B.A. degree in political theory from Berkeley, an M.D. and an M.A. degree in international relations from U.C.L.A., and an M.P.P. degree in public policy from Harvard.
