Abstract

The purpose of this study was to obtain information concerning smoking policies of the largest employers in Columbus and Franklin County, Ohio. Of the 187 questionnaires distributed to 89 employers, 158 (84.5 percent) were returned. More than one-half of the employers had smoking policies in place. Private employers were more successful than government employers in their efforts to deal with the problem of smoking in the workplace. Nearly 63 percent of the employers with more than 500 employees have written/formal smoking policies. Most policies on smoking were formulated by management. There is a need to inform employees of effective strategies they may initiate to promote development of smoking policies in their worksites.
