Examining the Supportive Disciplines of Health Education: A Conceptual Model and Example

Pages 18-22 | Published online: 08 Mar 2013

Abstract

The theoretical advancement of health education is dependent upon a focused recognition of the various supportive fields and subdisciplines. I believe that this recognition can be facilitated through incorporation of a question-driven model designed to incorporate applicable theory and practice elements from other helping professions. The field of social work was chosen as a starting point for the investigation.

Utilizing a series of questions, the model subsequently identified two subdisciplines—family therapy and school-social work—as being particularly relevant to health education. Further questions regarding theory and methods of these subdisciplines provided validation as well as direction for current and future health education practice. Ethical and political implications also are discussed.
