Abstract
The Refugee Health Education Program is an innovative programmatic response by the New York Association for New Americans, Inc. (NYANA), a voluntary resettlement agency, to bridge the gap between unmet refugee health care needs and health services available in New York City.
The program has been developed to provide refugees from the Soviet Union, Iran, Vietnam, and Cambodia with the tools they need to successfully negotiate the American health service system, to promote health through culturally-adapted education, and to provide resources for health care personnel to serve foreign-born populations sensitively and effectively.
The agency recognizes that specialized health education is a valuable resource for promoting the total well-being of the new American, and a vital ingredient in hits or her ability to become independent and self-sufficient. Operation of this three-year program has been made possible through grants to NYANA from private foundations.
