FILAMENT SPLITTING BETWEEN SEPARATING PLATES

Pages 19-30 | Received 25 Mar 1988, Published online: 23 Jul 2009

Abstract

The breakup of a liquid filament being stretched between two surfaces or plates separating at a constant velocity is analyzed using the nonlinear thin filament equation. Filament breakup is caused by plate movement relative to the average filament velocity and by surface tension-driven flow. The location of filament splitting is strongly dependent upon the initial velocity profile along the filament and the relative importance of surface tension to inertia. An approximate analysis, based on scaling arguments, is presented to estimate the time for filament breakup.
