STUDY OF ADSORPTION OF POLYMERS ON PARTICULATE SURFACES BY IMPREGNATION

Pages 1-17 | Received 04 Aug 1993, Accepted 14 Feb 1994, Published online: 24 Apr 2007

Abstract

A method of impregnation in horizontal and vertical columns to study the adsorption of polymers on particulate surfaces has been developed. This method makes it possible: (1) to measure the relative surface tension of polymers on particulate surfaces; (2) to calculate the adsorption isotherms of polymers using the Gibbs equation; (3) to calculate the heats of adsorption of polymers by the van't Hoff equation; and (4) to determine the coefficient of molecular diffusion of polymers. The adsorption of water-soluble associative polymer (MW = 51,000( from aqueous solutions onto titanium dioxide, alumina, and quartz particle surfaces has been investigated.
