Veiling Reflections and the Design of the Optimal Intensity Distribution of a Luminaire in Terms of Visual Performance Potential

Pages 53-59 | Published online: 20 Sep 2013

Abstract

Illuminating engineers have long realized the importance of reducing veiling reflections. With the concept of Equivalent Sphere Illumination (ESI) and reflective properties of the visual tasks (gonio-luminance factors), it is possible to demonstrate the effect of veiling reflections quantitatively, and develop an optimal intensity distribution that will minimize veiling reflections and optimize the visual performance potential. This also means that for a given value of ESI, it is possible to determine the least amount of lighting energy required, thereby optimizing the utilization of lighting energy.
