Theoretical Prediction of ac Characteristics of Mercury Arc Lamps

&
Pages 253-259 | Published online: 20 Sep 2013

Abstract

A theoretical analysis has been made that enables ac characteristics of mercury arc lamps to be predicted for any given lamp parameters, that is: lamp radius, electrode spacing, mercury pressure, ballast inductance and resistance, and power supply voltage and frequency. The theory is used to predict the effect of varying the arc tube radius, using a resistive instead of an inductive ballast, and arc extinction at current zero.
