The method covered in this article is the basis for criteria established by RQQ Report No. 3, “An alternate simplified method for determining the acceptability of a luminaire from the VCP standpoint for use in large rooms.” The basic equation used in this method to assess discomfort glare is known as the “Guth formula.” Here, the author's purpose is to show the basis for computing a luminance value, L, and to show how the method of assessing glare is related to the Guth formula.
