Abstract
Recently, high pressure sodium and metal halide lamps have been designed to retrofit existing mercury lamp luminaires. However, these lamps are compatible only with certain specified ballast types. Since the ballast is frequently not easily available for inspection, some type of device is needed to test for incompatible ballasts. The author describes the design of a small, inexpensive ballast tester that fulfills these needs.
