Abstract
The identification of safety colors must not require other clues, but must depend on the identifiability of single colors. Experiments conducted by the IES Color Committee indicate that identification of these colors is questionable, if not impossible, under certain light sources. The author attempts to adapt the CIE Color Rendering Index to indicate those light sources that will not render the safety colors identifiable. In such cases, supplementary lighting can be specified to make the safety colors effective.
