Abstract
Fatigue effects caused by vibration are the leading cause of structural failures in outdoor lighting equipment. An object of the paper is to describe methods for testing luminaires, as a design tool, in order to determine if they can tolerate the normal vibration forces occuring in service. A luminaire can have a high steady state strength and yet be very susceptible to fatigue failure. This type of testing can evaluate both characteristics; however, vibration testing is complex and must be properly controlled in order to yield meaningful results.
