In-Situ Evaluation of High Pressure Sodium (HPS) Lamp Capacity for Gettering Hydrogen

Pages 194-196 | Published online: 20 Sep 2013

Abstract

A number of 400-W high pressure sodium (HPS) lamps with different gettering systems were evaluated with respect to their hydrogen gettering capacity by exposing them to known quantities of hydrogen while they were operated within their normal voltage limits. Results demonstrate that activated Zirconium/Aluminum alloys proved a superior getter system. Evaporated barium films are excellent getters of hydrogen provided that the film temperature does not approach 300°C.
