Abstract

It is demonstrated that efficacy of HPS lamps increases with increasing diameter at constant wall temperature, and with increasing wall temperature at constant diameter. Utilizing an arc tube material such as Y2O3, having a lower thermal emittance than alumina, permits design of more efficient lamps capitalizing on this discovery.
