Abstract
At the peak of Naruse Mikio's directing career his most successful films were based on the work of the popular woman writer, Hayashi Fumiko. This paper explores Naruse's depiction of Japanese women and femininity, and the significance of these films on the development of women's films in post‐war Japan.
