Crisis communication in Chinese culture is complicated by traditional assumptions, values, and norms that guide behaviour. The metaphor of a family is useful in conceptualizing how an organization may react to crisis situations. Face‐saving and risky communication avoidance strategies are scripted and performed in response to a crisis. Lying and deception are examples of the extent to which organizational members will go to to save face for the organization.
