Pages 1-18 | Published online: 18 May 2009

The concept of information society was introduced over a decade ago. It stimulated great interest among social scientists and policy makers. But to what extent do people know about it? What do they feel about the changes forecasted by academics?

A total of 1,308 college students from Hong Kong, India, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan and US were surveyed. Students from different nations were found to vary in their level of knowledge regarding information technologies and the concept of information society. Even those from societies at similar stages of development, e.g. Japan and US, differed in their perception of the future. It is also interesting to note that majority of the respondents in this study did not feet information technologies can help to alleviate the most serious problems facing their societies.
