International sport aids cross–cultural understanding

Pages 86-89 | Published online: 23 May 2016

Abstract

“What the world needs now is Love,” said a popular English song, and that is exactly what the world is not getting. Where previous overtures for international peace and understanding have failed, Doug Stewart proposes a fresh approach pioneered by “Ping Pong Diplomacy” of 1971. The seeds of international peace and understanding may be sown in future, not on conference tables or the hallowed halls of the United Nations, but on the playing fields and sports arenas. Athletes, sportsmen and women may soon take on a new and vital role in bringing about international peace and understanding.
