Information Technology Initiatives for Development

Examples from Asian Countries

Abstract

Several Asian countries have launched initiatives to promote the use of information systems and technology (IS/IT). These initiatives are the subject of this paper which presents information gathered by the United Nations Centre for Regional Development (UNCRD) in its ongoing Research and Training Project on Information Systems for Planning. This paper also focuses on the roles that are being played by central and local governments and universities in encouraging the use of IS/IT.
