Cambodia’s Press Under Six Regimes

Pages 72-78 | Published online: 20 May 2016

Abstract

This article deals with the development of the press in Cambodia from the French colonial rule in the 1930s to the present Royal government, covering six regimes and their policies vis-a-vis the newspaper industry. The story of the press in Cambodia is one of survival against the backdrop of civil war, genocide and repression by the state. For the first time in the country’s history, a free press has taken root following the general election of May 1993. Still, Cambodians are debating whether they should have a completely unfettered press and political freedom before they achieve economic progress.
