abstract
This study seeks to replicate Lerner’s seminal research, documented in The Passing of the Traditional Society (1958), which led to his contention that Western democratic evolution was essential to the modernization process. Drawing on UNDP and World Bank data, the authors were able to explore the possible relationships between urbanization, literacy, and media and economic participation. Correlation tests were carried out to determine whether significant associations exist and these were compared with Lerner’s findings from nearly 50 years earlier. These new findings support Lerner’s original argument and suggest a systematic interdependence of urbanization, literacy, and media and economic participation.
