How Europe’s Political Leaders Made Sense of the Euro Crisis: The Influence of Pressure and Personality

Femke Van Esch and Marij Swinkels (2015) How Europe’s Political Leaders Made Sense of the Euro Crisis: The Influence of Pressure and Personality, West European Politics

http://dx.doi.org/10.1080/01402382.2015.1010783

In the original article, the designation of the ‘Belief in their ability to control events’ (BACE) scores of Merkel and Leterme were inadvertently categorised as ‘low’ rather than ‘average’. Rather than reduce their sense of threat, BACE lowers leaders’ sense of uncertainty and increases the likeliness that they will seek a role in the solution of the crisis, irrespective of the pressure they face.

Despite the error, the overall conclusion still holds that any comprehensive understanding of how leaders make sense of crises should take note of both key contextual factors and specific personality traits.
